Unconscious Bias and Workplace Discrimination

Course Code: UBW

Unconscious bias involves being unaware of factors that unconsciously influence our decision-making. This lack of awareness can lead us to act unfairly and in ways which contravene discrimination laws.

As discrimination laws affects almost every aspect of the workplace – from recruitment to daily management to dealing with complaints, decision-making about promotion and training, and conducting termination procedures – it is imperative that HR professionals and other managers understand unconscious bias and how to counteract its effects.

A greater awareness of unconscious bias can also assist organisations in terms of promoting diversity and inclusion.

This half-day course uses 'real life' case studies from discrimination law to explore unconscious bias and its consequences. For instance, it will discuss the discrimination case brought against Victoria Police regarding racial profiling and Victoria Police's response report released in December 2013. Their response report included a commitment to implement training on unconscious bias.
